Dr. Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, MD, MS, is a consultant Pediatrician and medical director at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the only tertiary referral health facility in the northern part of Ghana, serving a population of about 7 million. His desire to improve access to specialist child health services in northern Ghana made him return to his home region after training in Ankara, in the Republic of Türkiye. Since his return, he has led the establishment of a child health faculty and specialized services such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, pediatric specialist clinics, and a combined pediatric-adult sickle cell disease (SCD) clinic in the hospital. His efforts have led to the accreditation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital for residency training in child health, a feat he hopes will further improve access to specialist child health services in the region. In addition, Dr. Abdul-Mumin is an associate Professor of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine, University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. As an academician he is passionate about using research to improve clinical outcomes. His research interest areas include neonatal medicine, childhood nutrition, infectious diseases, and SCD. In this regard, he has published > 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented extensively in national and international meetings. He has also served as a mentor for numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr. Abdul-Mumin acquired his medical degree in Ankara, Republic of Türkiye and went on to complete his postgraduate training in child health in the same city and country. He is a St. Jude Global Scholar, and through this partnership, he is working on a project to improve early infant diagnosis for SCD and linkage to comprehensive care in Tamale, Ghana.
