HIGH IRI Fellow | Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center

Alexander Lankowski, MD, MA is an infectious diseases physician and global health researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. He completed his ID fellowship training at UW, internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center, and graduated from Boston University School of Medicine, where he also received a master’s degree in medical sciences.

Over the last 15+ years, he has contributed to multidisciplinary research seeking to understand the biologic, social/behavioral, and structural determinants of HIV outcomes across a range settings in the U.S., South America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. As a HIV clinician-investigator, Dr. Lankowski’s work is primarily focused on identifying novel strategies to maximize the impact of evidence-based biomedical and bio-behavioral HIV prevention interventions. He is currently supported by a NIMH-funded K23 award that aims to develop and evaluate an integrated HIV testing and linkage-to-services intervention among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Peru, which will combine venue-based testing with a tailored mobile health platform designed to promote linkage to treatment/prevention. He is currently based in Lima and has worked in collaboration with local partner organizations Epicentro and Via Libre since 2018 on research focused on enhancing HIV testing and prevention outcomes among sexual and gender minority populations. Previous studies have evaluated the acceptability of mobile health interventions to support community-based HIV testing, as well as the use of social network analysis approaches to inform the optimal location and timing of venue-based HIV testing interventions. In addition to his research, Dr. Lankowski is co-instructor of a UW Department of Global Health e-learning course, Clinical Management of HIV, and holds a clinical appointment at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he sees patients as an infectious diseases consultant.
