Public transportation
Metro Transit provides MetroLink train and MetroBus service across the St. Louis Metro area. A MetroLink train stop is located directly across the street from the McMillan Hospital building, in which the Gutmann Research Laboratory is located. Metro trains are convenient for trips to sporting events, concerts and traveling to the airport.
Washington University School of Medicine provides employees with a free Metro pass that can be used on all trains and buses.
Sporting events
St. Louis is known for its world-class sports culture. Home to the St. Louis Cardinals MLB team and St. Louis Blues NHL team, there’s always someone to cheer for. MetroLink train stops are located at each of the sporting venues downtown.
Busch Stadium houses the 2011 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. It played host to the 2009 MLB All-Star Game, and the 2011 World Series. Alongside Busch Stadium is Ballpark Village, where you can enjoy great food, drinks and entertainment.
The Scottrade Center is home to the St. Louis Blues. The team also practices at The Ice Zone skating rink located in the St. Louis Mills Mall. Many practices at the mall are free and open to the public. The Scottrade Center also hosts concerts and ice shows.
Central West End
Washington University School of Medicine is located in the heart of St. Louis’ trendy Central West End. Home to a wide variety of restaurants, businesses and urban loft living, the area is known for its eclectic atmosphere. The Central West End area is steeped in history due to its development during the 1904 World’s Fair.
Forest Park
Dedicated in 1876, Forest Park served as the site of the 1904 World’s Fair. It has since developed into one of the most popular attractions in the St. Louis area and provides a wide variety of activities for people to enjoy, most of them at no cost.
St. Louis Zoo
One of the most popular attractions within the park is the world class St. Louis Zoo, which has been named the #1 zoo by Zagat Survey’s U.S. Family Travel Guide in association with Parenting Magazine.
One of the few free zoos in the country, the St. Louis Zoo is home to over 18,000 animals from more than 500 different species and is one of the top attended zoos in the country with more than 3,000,000 visitors annually.
From Penguin & Puffin Coast to Sea Lion Sound and Polar Bear Point, there is always something new and exciting to see at the St. Louis Zoo.
St. Louis Art Museum
For those artistic souls, the St. Louis Art Museum is an exciting, free attraction. The museum collection includes works of art from almost every culture and time period, including Oceanic art, pre-Columbian art, ancient Chinese bronzes and European and American art of the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Missouri History Museum
History buffs will appreciate the treasures housed within the Missouri History Museum. The permanent collection includes exhibits on Charles Lindbergh, the 1904 World’s Fair and the history of St. Louis. Visiting exhibits are rotated in frequently and have included Treasures of Napoleon, Vatican Splendor and George Washington Carver, to name a few.
St. Louis Science Center
The St. Louis Science Center is a free, interactive museum that allows visitors to have fun while learning about a variety of topics including dinosaurs, human anatomy and the environment. The Science Center is also home to the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, the OMNIMAX Theater and a variety of rotating special exhibits.
The Muny
In the summer, fans of musicals can enjoy the fun at the Muny, Forest Park’s outdoor theater. Each season the Muny plays host to seven different stage shows, many featuring amazing local talent. Recent seasons have included Legally Blonde, Aida, Meet Me In St. Louis and Evita.
The Delmar Loop – University City
Named after the route streetcars took over a century ago, the Delmar Loop is both steeped in history and a hot spot for growth and revitalization. Home to the Pageant concert venue, Tivoli theatre and offering up over six blocks of eclectic shops, restaurants, galleries and the St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Loop is just a few miles from the Washington University School of Medicine and is accessible by Metrolink.
Jazz at the Bistro
Enjoy live jazz music the way it’s meant to be experienced at Jazz St. Louis’s Jazz at the Bistro. Located in the Grand Center art district, this jazz club has hosted some of the best artists in jazz.
The Jazz at the Bistro concert series is produced by Jazz St. Louis, a not-for-profit organization who has partnered with the Washington University Neurofibromatosis (NF) Center to offer Beat NF, a jazz music-motor therapy program for toddlers with NF1.
