This 10-month program is designed for recent college graduates and offers students the opportunity for a full-time mentored research experience, rigorous training in programming using Python, regular workshops on oral and written scientific communication, and individualized career preparation within a supportive community – ideal preparation for graduate school in genomics or a related field.

All students participating in the OGR Extensive Study program will take part in cutting-edge research as part of an independent research team in a lab at the Washington University School of Medicine. All students will give oral presentations on their research findings as part of a Closing Symposium at the end of their respective programs.
The OGR program provides competitive post-baccalaureate pay of $18.45/hour (80 hours bi-weekly gross pay of $1,476), with benefits options.
Requirements
- Residency: Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
- Major/Degree: Science, technology, engineering or mathematics
- A desire to pursue a PhD in biological science, especially genomics
Extensive Study scholars must have completed a BS within two years of the application.
OGR is supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute’s R25 Diversity Action Plan.

- Curriculum vitae or resume: Include education history, relevant research experience, volunteer or community service activities, teaching or mentoring experience, leadership experience, honors, awards, publications and anything else that you believe is pertinent. No more than 5 pages.
- Personal Statement: Provide an overview of your research interests, career goals, and why you wish to participate in this program. If you have not had previous research experience and/or scientific education, you may address it here. No more than two pages, 11-point font (Arial or Times New Roman), one-inch margins, single-spaced.
- Unofficial Transcript: Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript.
Two letters of recommendation must also be provided. If letters are not provided, your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. Please have your letters of recommendation sent to laurenj@wustl.edu by your letter writers. They should be received by April 1, 2025 for full consideration.
