EALC explores the complexity and richness of human experience as expressed in the languages, histories, cultures, and literatures of China, Japan, and Korea. Not only are the civilizations of East Asia among the world’s most ancient, these three cultural and linguistic areas have also come to play a vital role in today’s global economy.

The Chinese Section of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) at Washington University, offers the BA and MA degrees in Chinese, and the Ph.D. degrees in Chinese Language and Literature and in Chinese and Comparative Literature.

The Chinese program faculty include five in the professorial ranks and seven full-time lecturers. We offer five years of instruction in modern standard Chinese, putonghua, and a year in classical literary Chinese. Students are also encouraged to participate in our new study in China program at Fudan University in Shanghai.
