Mothers with Sons: A Retrospective Understanding of How Black Men Perceive their Mothers Communication During their Teenage Years.

Introduction
You are invited to take part in a research study looking at the communication patterns between Black mothers and their adolescent sons. Your participation in the study will contribute to a better understanding of Black mothers communication patterns and how they influence/impact Black men.

The study is being conducted within Washington University in St. Louis by:

The purpose of this study is to examine the perception Black men of how their mothers communicated with them during their teenage years. Your participation in the study will contribute to a better understanding of Black mothers communication patterns and how they influence/impact Black men. If you agree, your information will be de-identified and used to for the following:

A) Revise parenting education programs to educate Black mothers with teenage sons,

B) to create parenting resources for Black mother with teenage sons; and

C) anecdotal purposes on the Mothers with Sons Podcast.

We estimate the interview will take up to 70 minutes.


Study Procedures
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to sign the Participant Consent Form. Once you complete the interest form, a member of our team will contact you to schedule your interview. A member of our team will send you the location of the private room that we will interview in. When you arrive, the researcher will provide you a copy of the consent and interest form and confirm your participation. At the conclusion of the interview, you will receive your $40 stipend and sign a receipt acknowledging that you received the stipend. We understand that people change their minds. If you decide you do not want to participate prior to your interview, please contact our team at (314) 828-2208 to notify us.


Risks
There are only two risk of participating in this study. First,  is the inconvenience of interview, although this will only take around seventy (70) minutes. The second risk is the possibility of your voice being recognized in the Mothers with Sons podcast.

Benefits
While we intend that this research study furthers the knowledge and understanding between Black mothers and their sons, in the future, it will not be of direct benefit to you.

Costs
Participation in this study will not cost you anything, and, you receive a $40 stipend for your participation.

Voluntary Participation
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You do not have to participate. If you do take part, you can withdraw at any time without having to give a reason. Whatever your decision, please be assured that it will not affect you in any way. If you would like to withdraw from the study, please contact Dennis W. Confidentiality
All the information collected from you for the study will be treated confidentially, and only the research team will have access to it. Your information will be de-identified stored indefinitely (with a pseudonym) on an electronic server password protected and encrypted. The study transcripts from the interview will be de-indentified. We will forward you a copy of the transcript upon request. Our findings and results may be presented at a conference or in a scientific publication, but individual participants will not be identifiable in such a presentation. Should we publish our findings and results, we will forward you a link to the article for your information.
