Cardiometabolic Syndrome in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Our group has conducted research on various aspects of obesity and its impact on IBD including safety of bariatric surgery in IBD and its impact on disease activity in IBD. We have also assessed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Crohn’s disease, including its prevalence, risk factors for NAFLD, interactions with Crohn’s disease activity and medical therapy used in Crohn’s disease using proton density fat fraction mapping during MRE for disease activity assessment. Ongoing work is look at the impact of visceral adipose tissue on responses to advanced therapies, risk of ASCVD events in patients with IBD. We are now funded by the Helmsley Charitable Trust to study the effectiveness and safety of GLP1 receptor agonists on Crohn’s disease in collaboration with Mt. Sinai, NYC and Cedar’s Sinai, Los Angeles.
