The Silvio O. Conte Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis was funded in August 2021 by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  It is dedicated to basic neuroscience research that will transform the understanding and treatment of psychiatric illnesses with innovative psychiatric therapeutics: neuroactive steroids (NAS). Investigators in the Conte Center are experts in the chemistry and biology of NAS and are working towards understanding the mechanisms underlying the psychotropic effects of NAS. Specifically, we focus on ion channel, synaptic, neural circuitry and behavioral effects of NAS.

To enable discoveries and enhance our impact, the Center includes multidisciplinary teams of investigators. Faculty in the Conte Center have appointments across departments at Washington University School of Medicine and other institutions, including Tufts University, Duke University, and the University of Colorado. Find out more about our collaborative projects under the Research tab

Apart from the Conte Center’s basic neuroscience research mission, we are deeply committed to share our discoveries through education and outreach. There are various activities coordinated for research trainees within the Center and the broader community, including an annual symposium.
