Academic Partners


The Health Communication Design Studio (HCDS) was established in 2021 to investigate issues related to public health, particularly in underserved communities. HCDS works to create design solutions that address pressing issues, and evaluate their impact on communities. The studio brings together WashU students, alum, faculty and staff to partner across the University and the St. Louis region.  


I2 is overseen by a team of knowledgeable and experienced bioinformatics experts who have expertise in Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Sciences. I2 combines these elements to provide industry-standard infrastructure and software tools that enable the storage, integration, querying, analysis, and visualization of complex clinical datasets.  


Center for Community Health Partnership and Research (CCHPR) strives to diminish inequalities and enhance health and well-being through the establishment of community-academic partnerships, promoting effective communication, and conducting research.  

Center for Advancing Health Services, Policy & Economics Research (CAHSPER) acknowledges the significance of amplifying community voices in research and actively works towards facilitating a respectful and collaborative partnership between community partners and academics. Within the scope of reducing disparities, the CCHPR places great importance on conducting research that addresses this issue.  


The James Lab at Washington University is led by Dr. Aimee James, Professor in the Division of Public Health Sciences at Washington University. Her research focuses on cancer prevention and control, health disparities and community-based research. The James Lab is assisting the CHEST team in qualitative methods used within the study.   


Center for Dissemination and Implementation aims to enhance the field of Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) research methods through the creation of training programs and the promotion of new applied D&I research in various health disciplines. CDI strives to ensure the delivery of the most efficient services within clinical and public health environments.

The St. Louis Integrated Health Network (IHN) is a healthcare intermediary who aims to form partnerships that eliminate healthcare disparities by improving the quality, accessibility and affordability of healthcare for St. Louis’ most vulnerable and underserved citizens.  


Established in 1969, CareSTL Health is a federally recognized health center that is committed to delivering comprehensive medical care services. CareSTL primarily serves underserved, underinsured, uninsured communities. Their aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, can access quality healthcare services.  


The St. Louis City Department of Public Health is an organization dedicated to ensuring that the community of St. Louis is healthy and thriving. They achieve this through the provision of high-quality public health services and by fostering strategic partnerships within the community. Their key areas of focus are protection, prevention, and promotion of public health, ensuring continuous efforts in these areas to serve the public effectively.  

Affinia Healthcare is a highly respected federally qualified health center that has been serving the St. Louis community for over a century. Their unwavering commitment to providing primary and preventative health services is a testament to their dedication to the overall well-being of the community. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health, an integral part of the local government, works to uphold and enhance the well-being of all residents. Funding of CHEST


Founded 120 years ago, the American Lung Association (ALA) is a leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. Funding from the ALA helped support the foundational work for CHEST.  

The National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides global leadership for research, training, and education programs to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood disorders. The NHLBI is partially supporting this work under grant: K23HL17940.
