In 1990, Washington University pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons at St. Louis Children’s Hospital established the country’s first freestanding pediatric lung transplant program. Since then, the program has performed more than 400 lung and heart-lung transplants, making it the most active pediatric lung transplant program in the world.

Transplantation of the fragile lungs requires extensive surgical capabilities and presents unique challenges for preoperative and follow-up care. The lung and heart-lung program relies on the skilled dedication of medical specialists who manage pediatric transplant patient care before and after transplant.
