Fall 2023 update: New student groups (all those that are not listed under “current” or “past student groups” on the main Student Groups page) will be able to formally file their application in early Spring 2024 Semester.

How-to Guide: Start a New Group

  • Before beginning the process to start a new group, please review the past student group list and the WashU – wide graduate student groups to make sure your idea for a group is not already formed.
    • The Graduate Center has a list of active school-wide grad groups or they are searchable on WUGO.
  • In order to form a new student group, you will fill out a New Student Group Application (submitted to the Brown School Office of Student Engagement) and report that you have met all of the requirements to form a group:
    1. Minimum of 10 students expressing interest in joining the group
      • Collect names, WUSTL emails, and phone numbers from all interested students.
      • We recommend creating a survey (e.g. Qualtrics using your WashU account) to collect this information; the link can easily be shared around and you will have the info organized and ready to go to contact new members once your group gets approved.
    2. Minimum 3 students from those interested to serve on a leadership team:
      • 2 Co-Chairs
      • Treasurer
      • Student Groups often have other roles in this team such as a Secretary, Event Coordination, etc; these are determined by each individual group.
    3. One Student Group advisor: all Brown School faculty and staff members are eligible to serve as advisor; this is a volunteer role for them.
      • Tips on identifying an advisor:
        • Review faculty research summaries to see if faculty members’ work or identities align with your group; mention this when reaching out to them to request their being your advisor.
        • Contact the Student Engagement office for suggestions of advisors.
    4. Student groups should include information about (at least initial) plans of group structure (such as how often you will meet), group goals, and potential events or initiatives.

Renewing Previously Active Student Groups

  • Several student groups still have a faculty/staff advisor but do not currently have an active student membership.
  • Students interested in restarting these groups should work with Da’Shaun Scott, the Assistant Director of Student Engagement (dashaun@wustl.edu) to get in contact with the current group advisor who will be able to support you in filling out the required paperwork.
  • Restarted groups are required to meet the same criteria listed above for new student groups.
