Naasik and Michael met in Brauer 2011 to test the arduino breakthrough detection code Wednesday. The device was set up to test on acrylic. The arduino was able to read the signal but the detected baseline and peak values were different from what was expected. Naasik and Michael met in the Hu Lab on Friday […]

Week 27 Report (4/8)
This week was focused on preparing for the final report and poster. We made outlines for both the poster and report. We also started assigning portions of the outline to members of the group. Parts of the code had to be reworked. We started to design the poster as well. We also met to work […]
Week 26 Report (4/1)
Progress was made on both the updated signal conditioning circuit and the breakthrough detection algorithm. We finished constructing the circuit; testing confirmed that it worked as expected. The breakthrough detection algorithm is essentially finished and ready for testing next week. We also continued doing preliminary work for the final paper and presentation.
Week 25 Report (3/25)
We continued working on the prototype this week, focusing on the code and circuit. Overall progress is solid. We also started looking ahead to the final report and presentation. Some preliminary planning was done for this, including an outline for the final report. We also met with Ziang on Friday to discuss our current results […]
Week 23 Report (3/11)
We met on Wednesday to organize the lab notebook and plan the tasks to complete for the rest of the semester. We plan to finish the prototype device by the first week of April. On Thursday, we met with Ziang to update him on our progress. He mentioned that he expects IACUC approval within the […]
Week 22 Report (3/4)
Our time this week was spent working on the V&V report.
Week 21 Report (2/25)
This week we conducted more testing of the system. We obtained a number of acrylic squares from Ziang to use as our skull analog. We also made a silicone brain analog to place underneath the acrylic to mimic the breakthrough condition. During testing of the circuit, we discovered that the significant powerline noise observed in […]
Week 20 Report (2/18)
We set a new weekly meeting time of Wednesday from 4-6, so this weeks meeting took place at that time. Naasik, Shivaen, and Michael were present. We looked at test data from previous drilling tests and discussed how to improve signal quality. We started looking into different ways we could modify the circuit to help […]
Week 19 Report (2/11)
A filtering circuit was built (this will filter the signal from the CNC to the Arduino). This circuit will need to be refined but the basic circuit works. Progress was made on writing the code for the Arduino. A plan was also started for testing all of the design specs (verification). We also met with […]
Week 18 Report (2/4)
Naasik and Shivaen met on zoom on Monday to discuss breakthrough detection algorithm implementation and bone analog materials. Michael, Naasik, and Shivaen met with Ziang on Thursday to update him on our progress. See associated meeting notes for details.
Week 17 Report (1/28)
Naasik and Michael met on Monday to determine the major steps for developing the prototype. Naasik, Michael, and Shivaen met on Wednesday to refine these steps, complete the yellow stickies assignment, and assign each task to a team member to lead.
Week 16 Report (1/21)
Michael, Shivaen, and Naasik met briefly over Zoom on Friday to start planning for the semester and schedule weekly meeting times. We agreed to have meetings on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15-6:00 pm to work on the prototype. We also came up with possible times for our meetings with Ziang (our Hu Lab contact); we […]
Week 15 Report (12/10)
Met with Dr. Klaesner on Tuesday to discuss why the progress paper was turned in late (see Instructor Meetings – 12/7). Then met with Ziang on Friday to discuss the plan for the start of next semester when we will begin implementing and testing the chosen current sensing design. Budget proposal was submitted on Canvas […]
Week 14 Report (12/3)
All of this week was spent writing the Progress report and helping Shivaen prepare for the Progress presentation.
Week 13 Report (11/26)
No work was done on the project due to Thanksgiving break.
Week 12 Report (11/19)
On Tuesday, we met to continue researching our potential solutions. We ran a test attempting to collect data from the current based drilling solution but found it difficult to collect any data due to a large noise. We determined the next step here to talk to Ziang. For the NIR solution, we did a closer […]
Week 11 Report (11/12)
On Tuesday, we met to further research our potential solutions. We roughly tested the current-based breakthrough detection method to promising results. We also more precisely determined the components and cost of the NIR image based method. On Friday, we met with Ziang to discuss our progress. For the current-based breakthrough detection method, Ziang recommended that […]
Week 10 Report (11/6)
On Monday, we met with Dr. Klaesner to discuss our solutions brainstorming and advice on the Pugh chart and progress report. The team met afterward to brainstorm more solutions and plan our Pugh chart. We met on Tuesday to research NIR image-based mapping methods in more detail. We did not meet with Ziang on Friday, […]
Week 9 Report (10/30)
We met on Tuesday to discuss the solutions we had researched. The solutions that seemed most promising were current-based breakthrough detection and NIR hyperspectral imaging-based surface and depth profiling, so we more thoroughly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each. On Friday, we met Ziang (Client Meetings and Emails>10/29 Meeting with Ziang Feng) to discuss […]
Week 8 Report (10/23)
We met on Tuesday to discuss a new meeting time and brainstorm solutions to build. New weekly meeting time is Tuesday 2:30-4 in Urbauer basement. We determined that the main components of the craniotomy to be profiling and cutting. We brainstormed 14 profiling methods (4 previously researched) and split the remaining 10 amongst ourselves to […]
