Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics
Our Department’s scientific endeavor is centered on the idea that a quantitative and mechanistic framework is pivotal to our understanding of biological function. Our goal is to obtain a molecular understanding of how biological molecules carry out their functions and to elucidate the properties that drive the molecular interactions underlying both physiological and disease states. Our research integrates methodologies rooted in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, chemical and computational biology, and molecular biology. This integrated approach will provide the foundation for rational development of genetic and drug therapies, and ultimately personalized medicine.
We strive to provide a welcoming and open environment for our Faculty, Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Staff. We value a collegial approach to science that allows for new ideas and scientific debate to thrive. It is our mission to provide rigorous training of our Students and Trainees and foster the development of the next generation of scientists.

Ms. Maria Broering received her B.S. in Chemistry and minor in Biology in 2024 from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She then joined the Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Structural Biology program in the Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She recently joined Dr. Natalie Niemi’s lab in the Department […]
Several department members nominated Carrie for this award due to her exceptional generosity, collegial spirit, and unwavering commitment to supporting others. In fact, all of the nominations we received this year nominated Carrie for this award. Here are some quotes from the nomination letters we received on her behalf: “Carrie joined my group some […]
Dr. Michael Mannino is a classically trained synthetic chemist, receiving his PhD in 2019 in the lab of Dr. Alexei Demchenko developing novel and improved methodologies of carbohydrate chemistry at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. From there he moved to the lab of Dr. Gerald Hart at the University of Georgia, Athens studying intracellular O-GlcNAc-directed […]
