Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics
Our Department’s scientific endeavor is centered on the idea that a quantitative and mechanistic framework is pivotal to our understanding of biological function. Our goal is to obtain a molecular understanding of how biological molecules carry out their functions and to elucidate the properties that drive the molecular interactions underlying both physiological and disease states. Our research integrates methodologies rooted in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, chemical and computational biology, and molecular biology. This integrated approach will provide the foundation for rational development of genetic and drug therapies, and ultimately personalized medicine.
We strive to provide a welcoming and open environment for our Faculty, Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Staff. We value a collegial approach to science that allows for new ideas and scientific debate to thrive. It is our mission to provide rigorous training of our Students and Trainees and foster the development of the next generation of scientists.

Dr. Michael Mannino is a classically trained synthetic chemist, receiving his PhD in 2019 in the lab of Dr. Alexei Demchenko developing novel and improved methodologies of carbohydrate chemistry at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. From there he moved to the lab of Dr. Gerald Hart at the University of Georgia, Athens studying intracellular O-GlcNAc-directed […]
Mr. Jian Gao is a recent graduate in the Biomedical Engineering program. He defended his thesis in November of 2024. He did his PhD thesis work in the laboratory of Dr. Colin Nichols, where he sought to understand and find a treatment for Cantu Syndrome which is caused by gain-of-function mutations in KATP channel forming […]
Dr. Ben Garcia has received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to Brazil for 2025-2026. Dr. Garcia will spend a short time in Brazil over the next two summers to begin new research collaborations and teach a short course. The Fulbright Program is devoted to increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and […]
