The Achilefu lab focuses on accurate and rapid detection of cancer for assessing the molecular basis of cancer pathogenesis, preventing disease complication, and creating tailored therapies
Our research is focused on:
1. Development of novel molecular probes & nanomaterials for imaging pathophysiologic processes:
Development of near-infrared fluorescent dyes, quantum dots and nanoparticles
Bio-conjugation of dyes with custom synthesized or commercially available peptides, affibodies, and antibodies
Novel activatable imaging agents and targeted phototherapy agents. New materials are characterized using our spectroscopic tools
2. Preclinical and clinical evaluation of molecular probes and nanomaterials:
In vivo evaluation: Small animal models of disease are used for imaging
Cell biology, biochemistry, microscopy tools, and custom built state-of-the-art small animal imaging systems are utilized
In vitro evaluation: 2D and 3D cell cultures used for the assessment of ligand trafficking in cells, subcellular distribution, cytotoxicity, and therapeutic effect
3. Development of new imaging devices
A part of our lab is also involved in integrating the concepts of optical imaging and developing novel imaging devices for early and easier diagnosis of diseases.
